Money Advice for Grads

3. Start Saving Investing Now. That seems impossible to do, but from your first paycheck youll notice the government is taking out a hunk of money for Social Security - which likely wont be meaningful when you retire. Try making an equal automatic deduction to the company retirement plan or your own IRA, investing it in a diversified stock fund. Based on current $7347 maximum FICA cost and historic stock market returns, youd have a retirement account worth nearly $10 million in 50 years. And this would be your money - not a promise from the government.

Prioritise saving & investing over spending: Mashruwala

Q: Is the order right, should I say save or should I say spend first?

A: What people do is spend. What they should be doing is save. Conceptually and logically and for your benefit it should be from earnings set aside something. Robert Kiyosaki talks about paying yourself first because when we earn we end up paying everybody. We pay credit card bills and electricity bills, utility bills those we are paying somebody else. Ideally pay yourself which means set aside money ideally invest and then spend whatever is residual. So, what happens is earn spend and then save however ideally it should be earn, first save and then whatever is residual spend.
